The Behavioural Insights Team (BIT), a leader in behavioural research, is partnering with PayCaptain, a payroll provider, to help employees build financial resilience. PayCaptain’s payroll platform enables automated savings and responsible financial behaviours.

One in six UK adults have no savings, and 6.4% of adults in the UK (3.5m) hold. high-cost credit.  Low-income employees on volatile incomes face heightened financial stress, which can affect their mental health, productivity, and retention.

Through the Foundation’s support, this programme will co-design and test interventions to boost uptake of payroll-linked savings and prototype a payroll-linked lending offer. Working with employers like Roadchef and Dishoom, the initiative combines behavioural insights with smart payroll technology to reduce reliance on high-cost credit and promote healthy savings habits. With potential to benefit up to 50,000 employees and inform wider policy, the project aims to strengthen long-term financial wellbeing.
